What Is Somatic Coaching?

The bridge between body, mind, and real change.

You've read countless books on self-optimization and healing, listened to the podcasts, and on a rational level you may even know why you react the way you do in certain situations. And still, when the situation is actually there, you react and act the way you always have?

Then you're like many others. And please don't blame yourself for it. This isn't failure, and it isn't a lack of insight. It's simply the result of understanding and changing happening in two different systems. This is exactly where somatic coaching begins. Because it is the bridge between what you already know and what your body hasn't yet learned to believe.

THE SCIENCE

What "somatic" means and why it matters

The word "somatic" comes from the Greek soma: the body, as it is lived and experienced from within. Not the body as it can be observed from the outside in a mirror, but as the place where you are feeling yourself right now.

This inside view is exactly what we work with in somatic coaching. Unlike other forms of coaching, or classic talk therapy, it isn't about merely talking about a problem. It's about exploring and learning what your body is doing while you do. Those signs might be the tightness in your chest, the weight on your shoulders, the shallow breath, or the tension in your jaw. These signals are valuable, because your nervous system reacts faster than your mind can think.

Most of the communication runs from the body to the brain, not the other way around. That's why this direction is the key. It's why it's so hard to think your way out of overthinking, or out of a state of alarm. But you can create leverage through the body. You can read more about how that pathway works in my article on the vagus nerve.

ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE

What ancient traditions knew long before neuroscience

Neuroscience is a relatively young field of research, and new technology has moved it forward considerably in recent years. Some of what neuroscience can measure today has been taught in ancient traditions for centuries. That is no proof that every tool from those traditions works. But it is a remarkable overlap.

THE THREE CENTERS

How somatic coaching works at In Munay

Somatic coaching is a holistic approach that connects modern neuroscience with deep body work. At In Munay, we work with three centers — head, heart, and gut. Each one contributes something the others cannot.

That order is no accident. In our head-heavy world, where understanding and the rational mind take up most of the room, it matters to me to first create safety through understanding — the safety that gives my clients room for change. You can read more about the 3-Centers Method here.

CLARITY

What somatic coaching is not

  • Not therapy: coaching works in the here and now, not with diagnoses or severe trauma.

  • Not a massage and not a treatment. You stay actively involved — I don't do anything to you.

  • Not a spiritual practice that loses the ground beneath it. We always start with the science. Rituals are an invitation, never a condition.

  • Not a quick promise. A nervous system learns through repetition, not through insight.

WHO IT'S FOR

When somatic coaching fits

Somatic coaching fits above all for women who have already understood a great deal and notice that understanding alone isn't enough. Who function on the outside and are exhausted on the inside. Who sense that they have lost access to their body.

If you want to know whether you're currently in chronic stress or already on the way into exhaustion, my article on recognizing burnout will help you place it.

WHY ME

I know both worlds

I worked in the corporate world for a long time and lived that reality of performance, targets, and constant availability from the inside — until burnout stopped me.

Today I bring both together: an understanding of your performance world, and the knowledge of how change actually happens in the body. My foundation is over 1,000 hours of coaching training (Living Sense, Zürich), a yoga teacher training of over 700 hours, and shamanic training with the Four Winds Society. Plus a Bachelor in Textile Business Management, and the years on the hamster wheel that no training can replace.

In Munay comes from Quechua and carries the meaning of love that demands nothing. That is exactly how this work is meant.
